Due to Italy’s expertise in these areas, we are in a strong position to lead these conversations. Italy the currently Europe’s second largest producer of renewables with over one third of its electricity coming from green sources, and there are around 400 Italian companies employing 60,000 individuals producing components for renewable energy, with a total turnover of Euro 23 billion.   Italy currently represents 5 per cent of total world export of technologies for the sector and in the first semester of 2021, exports of Made in Italy renewable energy components to the UAE increased by 11 per cent, confirming the strength of the bilateral win-win cooperation in this field. In addition to this, over the last decade, the recycling rate of municipal waste in Italy increased from 31 percent (2010) to 51.3 percent in 2021.”   “During the Innovation Talks, we will tackle the burgeoning climate crisis and seek and explore potential solutions that will have a positive impact on the planet and community. In line with the subtheme of the Italy’s Pavilion at EXPO 2020 Dubai - Beauty Connects People - an interpretation of Expo Dubai’s Connecting Minds, Creating the Future - we shall demonstrate Italian excellence in innovation and sustainability at each session, and showcase Italy’s competence in connecting people through beauty, know-how and creativity.”   With 1.4kg of waste generated per day per person on average in the UAE and about 940,000 tonnes of waste -almost the weight of two empty Burj Khalifas - threw away each month by individuals and companies in the emirates of Abu Dhabi, solutions and innovative technologies to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill are crucial.   Bringing on the stage some concrete examples of solutions implemented in the region Mohamed Al Hosani, CEO Consultancy, Research and Innovation of Bee’ah Group stressed the importance of education and culture to solve the problem of waste management. “Awareness is the most important thing, it’s were we have to start from to initiate the change in the population” said the CEO of UAE’s leading recycling and waste management company, who joined the first panel discussion around the theme of cooperation between UAE and Italy.   During the second panel discussion were presented some Italian excellences to achieve a more sustainable future. In Italy the problems are quite similar with 41 mega industrial sites at national level which are going to be remediated, and in parallel 31,000 regional sites that are potentially contaminated”.   “In Italy we have 1.500 high specialized companies providing a high level of innovation and employing a total of 25,000 workforce to give to the sites a new life” added when talking about the answer implemented in the country thanks to the cooperation between public and private sector.   The talk was followed by a networking reception for the 55 Italian companies exhibiting at WETEX2021.   Each Innovation Talk will feature highly-regarded personalities from both Italy and the UAE.
